Tuesday, May 18th *Morning*

Year - 27515

The sun rose ahead of us. This drive had taken us more than a couple of days—ten days, to be precise—I slept and stopped anywhere I wanted. The freedom was needed. Now, watching our sun in the distance rise above the one thing I wanted to see above anything else, my heart beat faster and faster in my chest.

“Why does this feel like coming home?” I asked her. I moved a hand from her wheel, ran it over my trousers.

“You feel the pull of energy, the body of water,” she replied.

“It’s so strong,” I said. I wiped my other hand too, and then ran it through my hair, rubbed my growing beard.

“Road off to the left,” she said. “Nice and easy. Been a while since I’ve driven on real sand.”

Out of habit, I checked behind myself and noted no one else around. Then I eased the wheel off and onto the side road, which led out onto the sand. “How far can we drive?”

“I’ll let you know when we need to stop.”

It wasn’t long, and she asked me to ease off. I would have agreed; the feel of sand under her wheels was very different from solid driving. Wet, soft, and slippery.

“I’ll walk out with you,” she said, and her form appeared outside, walking ahead, her soft threads glistening in the sun.

The glowing rays of the sun reached out, shimmering against the water ahead. I lowered the gears and stopped, opening the door to climb out.

The sand beneath my feet felt different, the hint of salt in the air, the promise of cool water ahead.

I closed the door and walked away. Feet squiggling in that sand, I paused and reached down, feeling how cool and even damp it was.

Ivori stopped before me. “Beautiful, isn’t it?”

“I’ve seen nothing like it,” I admitted. “It’s more than beautiful.”

“Walk with me,” she said.

I moved in by her side. The soft clothes she wore moved around her frame as though there were wind down here. I smiled at her when she looked at me.

“You know what I’m going to ask. Can you tell me?” I held her eyes with mine. “I’d like to know.”

Her brows deepened; her eyes flicked away from me. “From the beginning?”

“From anywhere you’re comfortable,” I said.

Ivori stopped walking and looked at me.

There was such emotion coming off her. Such pain. With a hand I reached out, tentative.

“I don’t know if I can,” she said, her voice cracking.

“I trust you,” I said. “I’m here one hundred percent for you. Just like I know you are for me. Tell me the truth.”

“All of it?”

“If you can,” I replied. “All of it.”

She swallowed, licked her lips. Even if she didn’t need to drink, the action was clear. Her never were clear. The sun’s rays changed the scene in front of us. “I’m not just an Icarian,” she whispered. “I am the Icarian.”

Her words hit me hard. I didn’t know what it meant for her, or for that matter meant for me.
